How to increase Iman (Faith)?
This lecture was given by Shaykh Muhammad Hassam from Egypt and translated by Yahya Ibrahim. It is lecture with many words of wisdom that we can benefit from. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did, and I encourage all of us to implement this amazing lecture into our lives, inshallah. I will assure you most of the hadiths are SaHiH (sound) or Hasan (good). Also the brackets[ ] (not parenthesis) are my comments and the rest are the words of the Shaykh Hassam and Brother Yahya Ibrahim. May Allah give them both of them reward for giving us this knowledge….ameen
The Shaykh first praises Allah (swt) and sending peace and blessings on his Messenger (sws). He makes a Dua in which he says He loves you all for the sake of Allah. As Allah gathered us here in this place for the love of Him May he also gather us in Jannah”
Let us come together in belief for one hour. Divided the lecture into 4 points that he will expand on.
(I) Tajdeed ul Iman – Renewing Iman [loosely translated as faith] and increasing Iman.
(II) Hardening of the Hearts and its cure
(III) What is our End and what are we striving for
(IV) When will we turn to Allah in repentance
(I) Tajdeed ul Iman
[Def] Iman is statement that is made due to the belief in the heart that is shown by the actions of the body --limbs, hands, tongue.
The Ulimah have said “Iman increases when you obey Allah and decreases when you disobey Allah”.
In the Quran Allah (swt) says
“It is He Who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the Believers (mu’minoon), that they may add faith (iman) to their faith; for to Allah belong the Forces of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom (48:4)
The important aspect to focus on is that they are believers and yet their belief is increased by Allah’s mercy and tranquility descending upon them. [Believers who obey Allah (swt) their Iman (faith) strengthens because of their strong belief]
Hadith: Hasan
Al-Hakim reported in al-Mustadrak, and al-Tabarani reported in al-Mu’jam:
Hadith: Narrated by Ibn Masoud SaHiHProphet (sws) said “Iman decreases or gets worn out just as your clothing becomes worn our (Prophet (sws) makes a Dua) May Allah allow you to renew your iman”
“There is no heart that is not covered by a cloud just like a cloud covers the moon when it is shining, and so it suddenly goes dark, but when it (the cloud) goes away, it shines again [heart].”The clouds are the sins that may come over ones heart and when the heart is covered it hides the brightness and restricts body from doing good deeds [Effects the actions of body, limbs, tongue]. When the heart becomes hardened then it becomes target for the shaytan, lusts, evil.
Hadith: Muslim [could not find who narrated]
“Fitnah begins to envelope the heart just like how sticks build for shade one on top of the other. The darker it gets the harder the heart will become until one dark spot is placed on the heart. One sin increases many more sins, and then it [darkness] starts to envelope the whole heart. The heart will be so darkened that will never command good and forbid evil (amr-bil-maroof-wa-nahi-anil-munkar). [Respected Shaykh explains the opposite effect]. Prophet (sws) further explains that the heart that does not have darkness it is “free from all of this.”Now you may be asking how do I renew my Iman. There are many ways. [Names a few]
(1) Being constantly linked to the masajid. Especially praying the 5 daily prayers in the masjid [I am sure for women in her house].
{Gives Simile} “[Doing so] will be like riding the only ship that is found when the dark seas (fitnah) are moving in”
Hadith: Narrated by Abu Hurayrah Prophet (sws) said
“Should I not tell you of something if you do it will remove your sin, extinguish it, and raise you higher and higher in levels” Sahaba asked “What is it Oh Messenger of Allah” He (sws) said “Perform wudu on times of hardship.”
Shaykh Explains Hadith by saying: (a) Make wudu in body parts fully [completely](b)Make wudu with cold water
(2) Another thing one can do is to increase iman is to wait for one salah [prayer] after you prayed for one inside the mosque.
Hadith: SaHiH Bukhari narrated by Abu Hurayrah (ra)
“If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?" They said, "Not a trace of dirt would be left." The Prophet added, "That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds."Hadith: SaHiH Muslim narrated by Abu Hurayrah (ra)
“Five prayers from one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer is an expiation (of the sins committed in between their intervals) if major sins are not committed.”(3) To renew you’re iman a person must be with those who seek knowledge. Be constantly in the place where knowledge is being dispensed out. For when you are in these gatherings you learn halal, haram, sunnah, bidah, good, evil, Quran tafsir, Hadith. You can only find it in the company of those who are giving out the knowledge.
Abdullah ibn Masoud (ra) said “Seek your heart in three places (check how it is feeling). (1) When you are reciting Quran (how is your heart feeling, (2) State of Dhikr (remembrance of Allah/Prophets/Companions), and (3) When you are alone. Most important thing for a person to seek is knowledge. In Qur’an Allah (swt) does not say to The Messenger (sws) to increase in anything except knowledge. Allah tells the Prophet (sws) to supplicate to me.
If you do not feel anything in your heart, then Ask Allah to give you a heart for you have not been given one.
“Oh my Lord increase me in knowledge” (20:144)Hadith: Jadid (good)
Sahaba came to the Prophet (sws) “Messenger of Allah I have come seeking knowledge”Hadith: SaHiH Bukhari
Prophet (sws) said “Marhaba (happiness/glad tidings/welcome) to the one coming to seek knowledge. The one who seeks knowledge is enveloped by the angel’s wings and they ride one on top of the other until they reach the skies of this world”
“The one who remembers Allah and the one who does not remember Allah is like the difference between the living and the dead”The Shaykh said the same thing goes for seeking knowledge.
(4) To increase iman you must also “amr-bil-maroof-wa-nahi-anil-munkar” command good and forbid the evil.
(II) Hardening of the Heart
Each Person must make an oath in his heart [or a pledge]. The times we are living in are the times of sins, desires, accumulation of wealth, and forgetting about the day when we are not in this world. The cure to all of this is to have taqwa of Allah or be conscious of Allah/Fear Allah (swt)
[Def] The hardened heart is a heart that has no effect when the Qur’an is recited, or Hadith is narrated, or when an advice is given.
Allah swt says in the Quran :
“Allah has revealed (from time to time) the most beautiful Message in the form of a Book, consistent with itself, (yet) repeating (its teaching in various aspects): the skins of those who fear their Lord tremble thereat; then their skins and their hearts do soften to the celebration of Allah's praises. Such is the guidance of Allah. He guides therewith whom He pleases, but such as Allah leaves to stray, can have none to guide.(39:23)
Is it not time for those who believe to look at the orders of their Lord so he may cause their hearts to soften. Do not be like those who came before you.
Is it not time for those who believe in Allah to Fear Allah
Poem :
True fear is not to shed tears when remembering Allah.
True fear is when you stop the sins that Allah has prohibited you from;
for you may shed tears and continue sinning.
Proverb- “True fear is not by removing the tear, but it is by removing yourself from that which Allah has prohibited.”
We must strive to study the Qur’an and implanting it in our lives.
If someone was to be struck by a disease he would search the lands for the best surgeons/doctors, and qualified person to treat it. But how many of the people try to cure this major disease of not fearing Allah (swt), and to refrain from taking action to seek the scholars, ulimah, even if our hearts dissipate and die…[very few]
What is our End?
The Shaykh says it is either Hell-fire or paradise. As for the fire it is something we cannot take of handle, and we do not have the strength to burden it.
Ummar ibn Khattab (ra) said
“Fear the fire for its seat is severe its depth is deep and its tools of punishment are made of hooked rods” [sounds like a more severe warning in Arabic]
Allah swt says
“Fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones,- which is prepared for those who reject Faith”. (2:24)
[(It is) the Fire of (the Wrath of) Allah kindled (to a blaze), which leaps up over the hearts. It shall be made into a vault over them. (Sealed) In columns outstretched. (104:6-8)]
Hadith: SaHiH Bukhari
Prophet (sws) said “The fire we have in this world is one of 70 parts f the fire of akhira (final world)” The Sahaba said if it was just one it will be enough. Prophet (sws) said “the other 69 are multiplied in amount of heat.”
Food of the people of fire is fire [tree of Zaqqum will boil insides of body] (44:43-46).
Clothing of the people of hell-fire is fire (22:19)
Hot boiling water will be poured over their heads, will be given boiling water to drink, [and faces covered with fire]. (44:48) (44:15) (14:50).
And they will be beaten with rods and hooks.
[should have chills running down your spine by now!!]
Jannah
Hadith: SaHiH Bukhari Muslim narrated by Abu Hurayrah
"The first group (of people) to enter Jannah will be shining like the moon on a full-moon night. Then will come those who follow them who will be like the most shining star in the sky. They will not stand in need of urinating or relieving of nature or of spitting or blowing their noses…. Their wives will be large eyed maidens. All men will be alike in the form of their father `Adam, sixty meters tall.''.
Hadith: SaHiH Muslim; Al-Mughirah bin Shu`bah reported: The messenger said,
"Moses (as) asked his Lord: `Who amongst the inhabitants of Jannah will be the lowest in rank?' He said: `It will be a person who will be admitted into Jannah last of all when all the dwellers of Jannah have entered Jannah. It will be said to him: Enter Jannah. But he will say: O my Lord! How should I enter while the people have settled in their homes and taken their shares? It will be said to him: Will you be satisfied and pleased if you have a kingdom like that of a monarch of the world? He will say: I will be content, my Lord. Allah will say: For you is that, and like that and like that and like that and like that.(Allah increases the amount each time) He will say at the fifth time: I am well pleased, my Lord. Allah will say: It is for you and ten times more like it. You will have whatever your soul desires and whatever your eyes could delight in. He will say: I am well-pleased, my Lord.'
[What is the greatest blessings of Jannah? To see the face of Allah (swt)]
"When the people of Paradise enter Paradise , Allâh will say:
Arabic Poem:
"Do you want anything more?"
They will say, "Have You not made our faces white [i.e. honoured us]? Have You not admitted us to Paradise and saved us from the Fire?" Then the veil will be lifted, and they will never have been given anything more dear to them than looking at their Rabb, may He be Blessed and Exalted."
The pain of my heart will never by removed
until I know I have been granted forgiveness,
grated contentment by Allah,
and till I know I will be with the Prophet (sws) in Jannah.
[Better in Arabic of course]
When will we turn to Allah in repentance
Let us turn to Repentence
Woe to those who are reminded of the repentance and do not take initiative to do it for it is a transgression against himself. All of you must know that death will come unannounced [without an invitation]. No matter how much you have sinned the doors of taubah (repentance) are still open to you. You can always turn back to Allah (swt).
“Allah forgives not that partner should be set up with Him; but He forgives anything else,”(4:48)
Hadith: SaHiH Bukhari narrated by Au Hurayrah
Prophet (sws) said “By He who in his hands holds my soul if you do not commit sins Allah (swt) will replace you with people who do sins and asks for his forgiveness.”
Hadith:
The Prophet (sws) Saw a woman embracing her child and holding him to her bosom, Prophet (sws) asked the Sahabas do you think this mother will ever throw her child into the fire. Sahaba said no. Such will be Allah (swt) will be merciful to his servants for their repentance to Him. Allah is more happy to his servant when they ask for repentance then this women is to her child.
Hadith:
“The believers will be brought closer to Allah in Day of Judgment until it will be a one on one conversation with Allah (swt). Allah takes account of sins one after another. Allah shall shield you with kanafa (hide deed with) from other people. Allah tells the person you know you did this and this. The believer will admit to all the sins. Allah swt will say “I hid it from the people and on this day I shall forgive you.”
Repentance to be accepted must (1) stop committing sin, (2)Regret and be sincere about repenting, (3)Do good deeds and never do the sin again.
[May Allah make us enter his Jannata Firdous and save us from the punishment of the fire….Ameen]
